Introduction to Me

Introduction to Me

Hello, I am Travis Hachimura. I am a biology major here at OU, and I am currently in my Junior year. I am originally from Kentucky, I was born in Louisville and moved to Oklahoma around 10 years ago. I have lived in Edmond, Oklahoma for 9 years now. We also recently got a puppy. He is a mutt, we have no clue what breed he is.

Picture taken by me of my puppy, Torque, biting my shoes.

Shortly after moving to Oklahoma I tried out many sports, but only played most for a year or two. The only sport that interested me that I tried out was football. I played football until my Sophomore year of High School. That year I decided to go to a vocational school for half-days and could no longer participate with the school team so I decided to stop playing altogether. These half-days also meant I could no longer take part in Theater class as it conflicted with my schedule. I got into theater in middle school when I had to join the class halfway through the year, because I quit band but needed an elective. I took part in multiple plays, but worked microphones and sound for musicals because I was tone-deaf.

I went to the vocational school for Bio sciences and that got me more interested in Biology as a subject and why I chose to go into Biology in college. I am interested in the Biology of the Octopus as well as Evolutionary Biology in general.

Even as someone who is tone-deaf and can not sing along I usually find myself attracted to instrumental genres. I am a big fan of lo-fi as well as music with a lot of synth. I grew up with classic rock and still listen to it. I also listen to some rap, recently I have started listening to some more from MF Doom.

I love music, but I love reading books more. I really only read sci-fi and fantasy. My favorite book is The Demon King from the Seven Realms series. My favorite author is V. E. Schwab, I am currently reading her book Vicious and I am really enjoying it and would highly recommend.

This is me, nice to meet you.

  1. Hi Travis! Torque is such a unique name for a dog. How did you come up with that name? I am also a big fan of sports. I like to play, as well as watch most sports even though I might not be the most athletic person in the world. I mostly watch football and basketball though. What position did you play when you played football?

  2. Oh, puppies and shoes: that is a classic moment, Travis! Our neighbor has a dog and I often run into her when she is out walking the dog. We'll stand there and talk, and when the dog gets bored because we're just standing there talking, he'll start nibbling on her shoes. Which means: let's go now! enough talking already! And I share your interest in the octopuses; I like to think they really are aliens here on the planet. Even without that scifi fantasy, they are seriously amazing and weird creatures! Scifi and fantasy are my genres also, and I'm guessing you will get some good scifi/fantasy storytelling ideas when you get into the epics. Superhuman abilities are definitely part of the world of the epic heroes!

  3. Hi Travis! In middle school I did technical theatre in middle school as well, and also mainly did sound design stuff. I am also tone deaf, so maybe that's a trend in theatre sound crew members. It's cool that your interests are in the biology of the octopus - is there a research group on OU's campus that you have considered joining that focuses on the octopus? That would be a cool opportunity!

  4. Hey Travis!
Name is David, Bio major here too! Love music as well but I'm equally tone deaf. I go to Karaoke at the Alley Club with friends and it's mostly just a good laugh because some of them can sing and I definitely cannot, you should definitely check it out sometime. Also if you love fantasy books my top recommendations would be: Graceling and Throne of Glass!

  5. Hey Travis! I also love musicals and I am probably equally as tone deaf as you. In high school, my best friend was heavily involved with our high schools theatre group, so I spent all of high school going to every production and all the improv shows. Your dog is absolutely precious, as I am an avid animal lover. It is nice to meet you!

  6. Hi Travis,

Your new puppy is adorable, dogs are the greatest new additions. That is really cool that you did half days in the vocational school. I only went three days a week at my private school so I can relate. I also have somehow ended up tone deaf even though I was in choir for years growing up. Good luck in this class.

  7. Hey Travis!
Your major sounds interesting and hard for sure. I have a hard time with regular science in general so I applaud you for doing Biology. I would have to agree that football was also my favorite sport in high school. I think that it is neat that you loved theatre so much. I also love the name for your dog! Hope this semester goes well!

  8. Hi Travis,
I really am impressed by the way you picked up new interests in areas such as biology. To not be able to do something that you really love, like theatre, and then finding something else that interests you and moving on with that is really admirable, as I would personally mope about something like that, but you took it into your own hands to keep your life moving and your future bright!

  9. Howdy again Travis, that is one good looking pup – although it looks to be a handful! I’m curious to hear more about how being tone deaf has influenced your taste in music, as that’s just something I haven’t really thought about, and it’s such a specific influencing factor. Have you listened to much RJD2, Bonobo, or Ratatat? I feel those are solid electro blend bands that genre bend just a touch, and you may enjoy them.

  10. Hi Travis! You are very well rounded - from playing football to theater to a bit of band to running sound for plays and of course school! I think that is very impressive. Personally for me, I have had a few hobbies but they all stopped when I got into college. However, I do plan on picking them up again once I graduate. How about you? Are you wanting to do theater again or any of your other hobbies again? Or do you plan on exploring new hobbies?

  11. Hi Travis!
Your puppy is so cute! I've never even thought about the Biology of an Octopus before but reading those words together actually sounds really fascinating and I'm all of a sudden really intrigued. Also I think you read my Introduction and asked about my opinion on the Astros cheating scandal so here it is: They were definitely wrong to steal signs illegally but I think it's been blown out of proportion. When I played softball I always felt like sign stealing messed up my approach at the plate anyway. It just feels like if they were going to cheat they really should have done something more useful.

  12. Hey Travis!

Nice to meet you I am also a junior studying biology here at OU. I think you're waaay more into biology than me though. I think anatomy is cool but what really gets me going is evolution. I took that class sophomore year and it was my favorite one by far. I think it's cool to learn about all the different adaptations we have and learn the scientific reason to why we do the things we do. Hope you're having a fun time with bio here!

  13. Hi Travis! I love the name for your dog! Torque is such a cool name and I'm happy your family's been able to give him a loving home. He's adorable. It's also cool that you have such an interest in biology too! I think evolutionary biology is really interesting since we're constantly learning new things. And I love VE Schwab too! I read Vicious a few years ago and couldn't put it in down. She has a sequel out too so I think I'm due for a reread! Good luck with the class!

  14. Hi Travis! Love your dog! I have a mutt too, his name is Ranger. I was wondering how you came up with your dog's name, it is very interesting. I love that you are so interested in biology I have never been a science or math person, really. I think its awesome that you were willing to give up sports for vo-tech, I can really tell that you value your education.

  15. Hey Travis! Like you I have a passion for football; however, I never played in high school outside of pick up games with my friends. I love watching the Dallas Cowboys. I played soccer in high school along with track. Biology was never my cup of tea. I was never that good at it and preferred math and physics instead. Best of luck this semester!

  16. Hi Travis! Judging by your last name, are you half Japanese by any chance? My mom is Japanese so I think it's cool to find other halfie people. How did you get interested in octopus biology specifically? Octopi are crazy intelligent, they're so much smarter than people think. I read about an octopus breaking out of its glass tank before.

  17. Nice to meet you too Travis. I have always wanted a dog but I don't have the time to really take care of one like I want. I don't recognize the artist or author you mentioned but you've got me curious to look into them. I'm also a fan of sci-fi and fantasy and one of my favorite books is Eragon.

  18. Travis,

What an interesting name for a puppy! The first thing I thought of when seeing Torque was its relation to physics and how much I hate the subject... lol. What was the reason behind naming your dog that? I love that you know the specifics of why and what you're interested in pertaining to Biology - the octopus! Those things kind of freak me out, but I was never a fan of eight-legged creatures anyway. It was nice getting to know you, Travis!

  19. Hi Travis,
I am also a biology major here at OU but I am only a sophomore. I am more interested in the field of genetics but the evolutionary field of biology is also very cool and they all tie together anyway! The octopus is a very interesting animal extremely intelligent so I can see why you are interested in it. Biology in general is just so fascinating and I find that I can find more ways to relate it to my everyday world than with something like chemistry, which is as fascinating in its own right. I am pre-med but I am thinking more and more about doing something in the field of genetics.

  20. Travis,
Wow, I was super intrigued when you wrote that you went to a vocational school for bio sciences. What made you decide you wanted to do that? The biology of the Octopus and evolutionary biology sounds very interesting. I have never thought about the specific biology of that animal. What kinds of work do you want to do with your major? I assume something along the lines of marine biology would be cool since you are interesting in the biology of the octopus.

  21. Hi Travis, nice to meet you!! I think evolutionary biology is so interesting and we still have so much more to discover about our species, so I'm happy people like you can make some of these discoveries for us! What makes so interested in Octopuses? Do you think you'll want to eventually go into marine biology? Also, I am so tone-deaf but that still doesn't stop me from singing at the top of my lungs, haha! I've never read The Demon King, but I will have to add that to my list!

  22. Hi Travis!
That is crazy that you are from Kentucky! Both of my parents grew up in Louisville, and they also went to school there. My family also all lives in Edmond! Why did you move to Oklahoma? Your new puppy looks adorable. It sounds like you are a well rounded person-- an athlete, band, theatre, and a love for science! Good luck with everything going on in the world right now.

  23. Hey Travis!
First of all, Thank you for sharing photos of your dog, it always makes me smile when I see pets in people's introductions! I am also a musical theatre nerd and I was actively involved in my high school's drama program (though I can't sing at all either). I read through some of your stories and love your writing style! I wish we had been able to interact more this semester!

  24. Hello Travis,
I don't think I've ever seen a puppy named Torque before. It makes me think of truck commercials, even though it's a physics term. Do you have a cat named horsepower? Octopi are cool; the way they've evolved is fascinating. They're clever little buggers.

  25. Hi Travis,
The idea of enjoying music and being tone deaf made me really relate to you. I really like the name Torque for your dog. It looks like the name fits him well. That is a super creative and fun name. As a former high school football player I hope you are enjoying going to OU and watching the team.
